Silenus Case Study

Once the consultation with the client is over, our designers produce clay models of the details and carvings that will be included in the fireplace. Once these are completed, the models are then scanned in with 3D laser imaging equipment.

The scanner is a small portable device which creates a 3D digital image of the object required. This process is achieved without the need to touch the object and can rapidly record the finest details with perfect accuracy without any risk of damage.

It is capable of scanning more or less any object of any size. A typical life size statue would only take a few hours and needs only the operator, a scanner and a laptop. The 3D information is transferred to a computer where it can be altered and refined if necessary. It can be added to other objects, mirrored, enlarged or reduced in size.

The image to the left shows the scanning of the detail that appears on the jamb of the award winning Silenus fireplace, in clay.

This information is then relayed to our 6 axis CNC machine which begins to shape the chosen material. This takes time out of the carving process and keeps the sometimes prohibitive cost of quality carving to a minimum.

The robot can read the information gathered by the scanner to produce a copy of the original with great accuracy in marble or stone.

The cost savings, quality and accuracy afforded by using the robot have taken the creation of statuary and carving onto a new level and made previously cost prohibitive projects viable.

The carving is then hand finished, and details added by our master craftsman.

Our incredible story begins in the early 20th century, with our founding by master mason Henry Rotherham.
